The goal of the Youth Business Forum is to inspire and educate 100,000 new and existing young entrepreneurs by 2020. In achieving this outcome, we aim to create and inspire thousands of enterprises and job opportunities, making a significant contribution to the global employment challenge.
Young people are among the most vulnerable in a global economic downturn. There is a big challenge not only to increase the quantity of jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities for youth, but also the quality of jobs and of entrepreneurial, vocational and technical skills.
The World Bank estimates that by 2015 – target year for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), there will be three billion people in the world under the age of 25. While this generation will be the most educated ever, International Labour Organisation statistics forecast a sustained rise in the numbers of unemployed youth.
Young people already make up as much as 40% of the world’s total unemployed, and are almost three times as likely to be unemployed as adults – a situation exacerbated by the recent world financial crisis. Halving the world’s youth unemployment rate would add an estimated US$2.2 trillion to US$3.5 trillion to the world economy.
WHY ATTEND THE YOUTH BUSINESS FORUM?
Running a business helps young people achieve economic independence and reduce their reliance on state welfare. Young entrepreneurs are more likely to engage in their local community, spreading their experience and energy, creating additional jobs. Entrepreneurship is not for everybody, but for many it can provide a long-term route out of poverty into financial success.
Without hard-earned experience, young people may think that running a business is not that hard to do. To avoid the pitfalls, it is important to be educated about the nuts and bolts, pitfalls and rewards, agony and ecstasy of “being your own boss”.
Employment boosts our self esteem, making us productive members of a family and community. Research has shown a link between youth unemployment and social exclusion: a sense of purpose
